Large earthquakes are predicted to occur within 50 years, which will cause the similar damage. In this paper, we develop a splitting wall as a new sloshing reduction device. Model experiments and numerical simulations are performed to examine the effect of the device. The experimental results indicate the proposed device is effective to reduce sloshing against sinusoidal input motion. We also perform numerical study to simulate the experimental result. Both experimental and numerical results are almost same. Based on the numerical simulation, the proposed device can be also effective against earthquake ground motion.

Introducing Padded Wall to Reduce Sloshing Induced Wall Pressure in Water Storage Tanks
Sloshing due to ground motion develops large pressure on the walls of water retaining tanks. This paper evaluates the efficacy of padded walls on the reduction of sloshing effects in rectangular water storage tanks subjected to ground motion. An analytical solution based on velocity potential function is provided to obtain the response of rigid and padded wall tanks in terms of the wave elevat...
متن کاملIntroduction of Air Cushion to Reduce Seismic Demand in Cylindrical Water Storage Tanks
Water storage tanks not designed explicitly for seismic loading could require retrofit. One of the common ways of retrofit include some structural change in the lateral load resisting system that could be expensive and requires the tank to be out of service for relatively long time. This paper introduces a novel method to reduce seismic demand on tank’s wall without structural intervention. Thi...

Abstract Sloshing describes liquids motion in the semi-filled tanks, and exerts dynamic loading on its walls. This effect is of great importance in a number of dynamic systems e.g. aerospace vehicles, road tankers, liquefied natural gas carriers, elevated water towers and petroleum cylindrical tanks. Pressures insert impacts which are important for structural strength evaluation and its co...
متن کاملEstimation of Sloshing Wave Height in Broad Cylindrical Oil Storage Tanks Using Numerical Methods
Cylindrical steel tanks are important components of many industrial plants such as oil refineries and chemical plants. Usually failure of cylindrical tanks leads to serious consequences. During the past earthquakes such as 1964 Alaska and 1999 Turkey seismic performance of cylindrical tanks revealed that tanks are seismically vulnerable. Therefore, evaluation of seismic performance of these str...

Numerical analysis of fluid sloshing in tank wagons is amongst essential research ideas that are focused by railway engineers. The free surface of fluid becomes unstable and turns into a dynamic complex non-linear problem for fluid-structure interaction (FSI). In this paper, initially, the dynamic response of the tank, including lateral force analysis and pressure distribution during braking, i...
